Discovering Cosmico: Mocama Beer Company’s Flagship IPA That’s Better Than Ever
I haven’t tried a Mocama Cosmico draft in a while, but recently enjoyed a pleasant surprise. I’m guessing it has everything to do with a new owner and probably a slight change to process or carbonation, but wow! I’m my opinion…a noticeably better IPA!

If you’re a craft beer lover in Northeast Florida — or just passing through Amelia Island — there’s a good chance you’ve encountered Cosmico, the year-round flagship India Pale Ale from Mocama Beer Company. At 7.0% ABV and 69 IBUs, it’s not trying to be the hoppiest or juiciest IPA on the shelf. Instead, it delivers something rarer: refreshment and balance in a modern American style that keeps you coming back for another pint.
I recently had the chance to dive deeper into its story, and I’m excited to share why this beer stands out — from its thoughtful origins to its vibrant present under new ownership.
The Roots of Mocama Beer Company
Mocama Beer Company opened its doors in 2020, founded by four friends who shared a passion for brewing distinctive beers in a special setting. They transformed a historic 1954 building — the former Lasserre Motor Company dealership — into a stunning mid-century modern taproom and coffee shop just blocks from downtown Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island.
The name Mocama (pronounced “mo-comma”) pays homage to the region’s deep indigenous history. It refers to the unique Timucua dialect spoken by the native people along this narrow coastal strip, stretching from near St. Simons Island, Georgia, south to St. Augustine, Florida. In translation, “Mocama” means “the ocean” or, more poetically, “big water where the sun is born.” For the founders, it was more than a place name — it was a way to honor the coastal heritage and identity of Amelia Island.
The taproom itself feels like a love letter to the area: elegant, welcoming, and perfect for lingering over a beer, a coffee, or live music.
What Makes Cosmico Special?
Cosmico was developed during the brewery’s early R&D phase on their pilot system and quickly became the flagship. It’s brewed with a slightly toasty malt backbone (two-row malt, flaked oats, and flaked wheat) that provides smoothness without heaviness. The hops take center stage with bright citrus and juicy tropical fruit notes from Citra and Sultana, while El Dorado adds balanced bittering with subtle pear and watermelon undertones. A special DIPA ale yeast contributes unique peach-like esters that tie everything together beautifully.
The result? A hazy-yet-crisp IPA that tastes like a tropical fruit cocktail — think fresh oranges, mango, and pineapple — but stays clean, drinkable, and never cloying. Reviewers often praise its balance: fruity and aromatic without extreme bitterness or sweetness. It ages gracefully in the can too, with that eye-catching, almost Gatsby-esque label design turning heads on store shelves.
Whether you’re a hazy IPA fan who wants something more refined or a traditionalist looking for approachable hop character, Cosmico hits the sweet spot.
A Remarkable Turnaround: Why Cosmico (and Mocama) Is Better Than Ever
Like many small breweries, Mocama faced challenges in the competitive craft beer landscape. By early 2025, the original owners were on the brink of closing. That’s when local tech entrepreneur Andrew Batey and his wife Kim stepped in at the eleventh hour. They purchased the brewery in April 2025 and immediately went to work streamlining operations, improving efficiency, and refocusing on quality and growth.
The results have been impressive. Beer sales are up significantly, food sales have skyrocketed (reports of up to 400% growth in some areas), and the taproom has regained its vibrant energy. The team has enhanced consistency across the lineup while keeping beloved classics like Cosmico front and center. New brews and an expanded menu are in the works, and the brewery is eyeing major expansion — including plans for up to four new locations, one of them in nearby Jacksonville.
Under the new ownership, Mocama feels revitalized: operations are tighter, the atmosphere is buzzing, and the beer — including that flagship Cosmico — benefits from renewed attention to detail. It’s the same great recipe, but with even better execution and broader availability in cans and on draft across Northeast Florida.
Come for the Beer, Stay for the Vibe
If you’re in Fernandina Beach, make time to visit the taproom at 629 South 8th Street. It’s open daily with generous hours, offers brewery tours, and hosts live events. You can enjoy Cosmico fresh from the source alongside other Mocama favorites, great coffee in the mornings, and a beautiful restored space that honors both history and modern craft.
Whether you’re a local, a beach visitor, or just someone who appreciates a well-balanced IPA, Cosmico is worth seeking out. It’s a beer with soul — rooted in local heritage, crafted with care, and now thriving stronger than ever.
